Summer Slip and Fall Injuries

Posted on June 4, 2020

Summer is a time to be outdoors, but it can also involve dangers that can sometimes be avoided.  South Florida weather and summertime storms can be just as much of a contributing factor in slip and fall accidents as in the winter. For instance, brief but powerful summer thunderstorms can hit quickly and create hazards at entrances, lobbies, aisles and stairways of stores, restaurants, office buildings and other commercial and public places.  During summer, small children and older seniors are even more likely to slip and fall when they enter into a store during a typical Florida afternoon thunderstorm.

Recent data from Florida’s Department of Health shows that unintentional falls are the leading cause of non-fatal, injury-related hospital admissions, and are the fourth leading cause of death from sudden injury across all age groups. A fall can end in death or disability in a split second, but with a few simple precautions, you can stay safe.

How Slip and Fall or Trip and Fall Accidents Occur

The term “slip and fall” and “trip and fall” are used in personal injury cases where the injured person slipped or tripped while on another person’s property. Most slip and falls come under the umbrella of premises liability claims. Slips, trips and falls happen everywhere – in retail stores, restaurants, schools, government offices, manufacturing facilities, corporate offices and at home.

Any property, whether privately owned or a public business, has to keep their grounds safe for anyone that may be walking there. This means that any of the following could cause a slip-and-fall accident because of negligence:

  • Recently mopped floors or floors with liquids and no warning sign;
  • Poorly lit areas or other hazards difficult to identify;
  • Floor height differences or uneven surfaces with no warning signs;
  • Items in stores that are stacked to dangerous heights;
  • Lack of proper hand rails;
  • Potholes on outdoor surfaces, and
  • Slippery floors caused by rain.

Your slip may have caused severe injuries including the following:

  • Back and neck injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Brain injury
  • Fractures
  • Sprains

If you were on another’s property and injured yourself in a slip-and-fall accident, it may be because the property owner was being negligent. Property owners are required to take reasonable care to ensure that their property is safe.
