Florida Boating Accidents

Posted on June 24, 2020

According to the Boating Accident Statistical Report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida has the largest number of registered vessels of any state in our country, with over 960,000 registered recreational vessels.  Florida also has the largest number of boating accidents.  In 2019, there were 723 reportable boating accidents which included 65 fatalities and 453 injuries.

With large populations near the water, it is not surprising that the South Florida counties are named among the 10 counties with the highest number of boating accidents.  Included in this list are Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Monroe, Martin, Pinellas, Collier, Lee, Citrus, and Okaloosa.[1]

Florida has more than its share of boating accidents, with 16% of the nation’s national boating fatalities, according to 2019 the U.S. Coast Guard.  California has the second highest number of boating accidents, with less than 50% of Florida’s statistics.

According to the 2019 Recreational Boating Statistics Report from the U.S. Coast Guard, alcohol use was a leading contributor in fatal boating accidents and was named as the leading factor in 23% of accidents. [2]  In addition to alcohol use, operator distraction, improper lookout, lack of experience, and excessive speed round out the other four primary contributing factors in fatal boating accidents.

The U.S. Coast Guard works to improve boating safety in the United States, offering tips, training, and important safety information for anyone who plans to be out on the water.  If you’re heading out on the water, be sure to wear a life jacket, attach the engine cut-off switch in power boats, complete a boat safety check and safety course, and avoid alcohol or other substances that can impair your ability to operate a boat.  For more information, take a look at https://www.uscgboating.org/.
