Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month: Staying Safe on Your Motorcycle in Palm Beach County

Posted on May 6, 2025

Every single day, more than 25 motorcyclists in Florida are involved in a traffic accident – that comes to 9,439 motorcycle accidents per year. Here in Palm Beach County, there were 489 motorcycle crashes in 2024, resulting in 405 injured people and 32 deaths. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Because of their small size and lack of protection, motorcycles are inherently more dangerous than other motor vehicles. As a motorcycle rider, it’s essential that you take precautions to stay safe on the road and avoid becoming a statistic.[1]

The single most important precaution that can save your life is wearing a helmet. The State of Florida requires that all motorcycle riders under age 21 wear one. For older riders, even though wearing a helmet is not legally mandated, if you value your life, you should wear one. Wearing a helmet reduces a rider’s risk of death by 37% and risk of head injury by 69%[2]

There are many different types of helmets. A full-face helmet that covers your entire head provides the most protection. Your helmet should fit snugly around your head and stay in place. The padding should feel comfortable. Many riders prefer lightweight helmets – such as ones made from polycarbonate or fiberglass. Having a lightweight helmet is important if you take long rides since they can reduce the strain on your neck. Similarly, given South Florida’s tropical climate, make sure your helmet has adequate ventilation. Finally, your helmet should be certified by the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), or the Snell Memorial Foundation.

Your head isn’t the only body part that needs protection. Protect the rest of your body by wearing a high-quality motorcycle jacket, pants, gloves and boots. This can prevent road rash if you are thrown off your bike in an accident. Wearing reflective tape on yourself and your bike can help maximize your visibility, especially if you ride in the evening or nighttime.

Another way to protect yourself on your motorcycle is to check the weather forecast before you start your ride. Florida’s notorious afternoon thundershowers are dangerous for anyone on the road, but are especially perilous for motorcyclists because motorcycles generally have less traction than cars or trucks.

If you are new to motorcycling, you could also take a motorcycle safety course to ensure you are up-to-date on the latest safety recommendations. Several organizations offer courses in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties.

Riding a motorcycle can be an exhilarating way to experience Florida’s beautiful scenery and weather. If you or a loved one are injured while riding a motorcycle, contact ECanter Lawyers for a free case evaluation.
