National Safety Month: Tips for Staying Safe in Everyday Life

Posted on June 16, 2025

As one of South Florida’s preeminent personal injury law firms, we see countless preventable accidents that lead to catastrophic injuries and needless deaths. In honor of National Safety Month, following are some tips that can help you and your loved ones stay safe.

Safe Driving

Many of our clients come to us after being injured in a car accident in South Florida. Driving while impaired killed 204 people in Florida last year and injured 192 others[1]. If you drink, even a sip, don’t drive, it’s that simple. This can save your own life as well as those of your family members and friends.

Another dangerous, but common activity is distracted driving. Many people erroneously believe that distracted driving only means texting while driving. While this is one type of distracted driving, others include eating or drinking while driving, talking on the phone (even hands-free), playing with the radio, or any other activity that takes your concentration away from the road. In 2023, distracted driving killed 3,275 people, and injured many others[2].

Avoiding Slips, Trips, and Falls

A major source of injury, especially among older people, is slips and falls. Slips and falls can cause broken bones, back injuries, muscle sprains, and concussions. Some actions you can take to prevent slips and falls on your property are:

  • Clean up any spills promptly.
  • Avoid having any electrical cords in areas where people will be walking. If this is unavoidable, tape down the cords to minimize the likelihood of someone tripping on them.
  • Ensure all steps have handrails and that they are in good condition.
  • Repair any potholes or uneven surfaces to reduce the risk of tripping.

Creating a Safe Home Environment

Your home is your refuge, but it can also pose dangers to your family and your guests. Many families love to bounce on the trampoline, but backyard trampolines have been responsible for more than 800,000 injuries between 2009-2018, according to the Mayo Clinic[3].  To compound this tragedy, if someone is injured on your trampoline, many homeowners’ insurance policies will not cover it, potentially making you personally liable to pay for their injuries.

Another all-too-common injury at home is drowning in a backyard pool. Every day, there are 11 drowning deaths and 22 nonfatal drownings in the US. For children ages five years and under, 87% of these drownings occur in home pools or hot tubs. If you have a backyard pool, it’s essential to have a locked fence around it and always supervise children who are in the pool or on the pool deck.[4]
