After an Auto Accident, How Can You Get the Most Compensation?

Posted on February 17, 2022

28 people were injured in car crashes every hour in Florida between January and November last year[1].  Those who were seriously injured may face mounting medical bills, lost wages, disability, pain, and long-term psychological effects. On top of that, many victims’ families will face added stress, financial worries, and lack of companionship. If you were badly injured in an accident, you may be wondering how you can secure the most compensation for your injuries. Following are five tips to help you through this process:

If possible, take photos and videos of the accident scene.

If you are well enough, take photos and videos showing the scene of the accident, all cars involved, weather conditions, lighting conditions, and any visible injuries. The photos will provide evidence to corroborate your story and make it more likely to convince the insurance company to settle or the jury to agree with your version of the events.

Seek medical treatment right away.

You should be checked out by a doctor ideally that same day, or the next day at the latest. If you wait to visit the doctor, the opposing side can claim that your injuries were caused by something other than the accident. Follow all the doctor’s orders, fill any prescriptions, keep all appointments for follow-ups, and enroll in any rehabilitation recommended, such as physical therapy. This will help build the case that you have done everything you could to improve your health.

Keep accurate records.

Keep track of your lost wages are if you are unable to work. This should also include any benefits you would have received from work such as health insurance, dental insurance, etc. Keep accurate logs of all medical expenses, such as doctors’ bills, imaging, lab tests, medical equipment, prescriptions, and any other medical costs. The compensation you receive, including any allotment for pain and suffering, will be calculated based on your actual, verifiable losses, so keep track of every penny.

Take a social media hiatus.

Avoid posting anything at all on social media until your case is resolved. Even if your account is private, it is still possible for the opposing side to gain access to it. The opposing side will be checking your social media pages and will try to show that you are not as badly injured as you actually are.
