Update on Driving in South Florida’s Construction Zones

Posted on January 23, 2023

Construction zones are notoriously difficult to navigate. With shifting lanes, slow-moving equipment, and debris in the road, it’s no surprise that construction zones are magnets for accidents. Compounding the issue is that since there is little to no shoulder in construction zones, a two-car accident can quickly escalate to a multi-car pile-up. If you find yourself injured in a construction zone accident, following are seven tips that can help you recover compensation or your injuries:

  • Call 911 right away for police to inspect the accident scene and provide emergency medical services to anyone who needs them. When the police arrive, tell them accurately what happened without embellishment or downplaying any details.
  • If there is room, pull your car off to the side so traffic can pass by. This can help prevent a multi-car pile-up.
  • If you are able, take photos and videos of the entire scene including any injuries that you or your passengers sustained, all the cars involved, the construction zone, any debris in the road, signage (or lack thereof), weather conditions, and anything else that you believe is pertinent.
  • If any construction workers or other passersby witnessed the accident, take down their phone number and email address as well. Their testimony could be important if you need to file suit against the other driver’s insurance company.
  • Seek medical attention right away. Even if you feel fine, go to your local hospital or urgent-care center for a medical exam. Immediately after the accident you may not realize the full extent of your injuries due to the adrenaline rush that most people experience. If you end up making a personal injury claim against the other driver’s insurance, the sooner you visit a doctor, the easier it will be to prove your claim. Additionally, your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance requires that you visit a doctor within 14 days of the accident to make a medical claim.
  • Keep track of how you feel in the days and weeks after the accident. In some cases, injuries without external symptoms, such as traumatic brain injuries, concussions, organ injuries, or soft tissue injuries, may not appear for days, weeks or even longer after the accident occurs. If you experience any symptoms that are out of the ordinary for you, return to your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
  • Contact a personal injury attorney who specializes in representing victims of car crashes, like ECanter Lawyers, as soon as possible after your accident. Even if you are not sure if you can or should file a claim against the other driver, meeting with our experienced legal team will help you understand your rights and options so you can make an educated decision on the best course of action for you to obtain compensation for your injuries.
