Diverging Diamond Interchanges

Posted on February 9, 2023

After years of construction, the diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at the Glades Rd exit on I-95 in Boca Raton has opened this year. The $148 million project is Palm Beach County’s first such interchange.

What is a DDI?

A DDI is a relatively new type of interchange, developed around the turn of the century. At the interchange, the lanes on the overpass cross over to the opposite side so that drivers temporarily drive on the left side of the road. Then, once the overpass ends, the drivers return to the right side of the road. The first American DDI was built in Springfield, MO in 2009 and the first one in Florida was built in 2017 in Sarasota.

What is the purpose of a DDI?

DDIs reduce traffic accidents caused by left-hand turns. In fact, at the site of the original Springfield, MO DDI, there was a 60% decrease in crashes compared to the older style of interchange[1]. DDIs also create a more efficient traffic flow since fewer traffic signals are needed and the waiting time for each traffic phase is reduced. This can lead to fewer traffic jams. At the DDI site in Missouri, 95% of drivers felt there was less congestion after the new DDI was installed than beforehand[2].  Additionally, DDIs provide easier access to enter and exit the freeway because they eliminate the need to cross opposing lanes of traffic and reduce the likelihood of cars entering the highway in the wrong direction.

Won’t this create confusion?

Admittedly, this sounds confusing and sounds like something that would cause more accidents rather than fewer. However, the reverse is true. Drivers continue to follow their lane, which is clearly marked on the asphalt as well as follow the traffic signals and the traffic flow works as it should.

Whenever there is a new traffic pattern, whether it is a DDI or any other change from what drivers are accustomed to, there is the potential for accidents. This means that right when the new DDI launches, it will be important for all drivers to pay extra close attention to the road and the cars around them.
