Pool Safety Tips

Posted on June 27, 2023

With the temperature soaring, July is the perfect time of year to invite friends over to cool down and splash in the pool. Pool parties are loads of fun for everyone. As the host, you are responsible for making sure everyone stays safe. Not only will this protect your friends and family, but it can protect you from a possible lawsuit. Pool parties have many hidden dangers that we often don’t consider, but can turn a relaxing event into a tragic one.

Pool parties can cause drownings or near-drownings, slip and falls, diving board accidents, entrapment by a pool toy, and injuries caused by the pool suction systems. While some injuries may be minor, others can cause traumatic brain injuries, concussions, spinal cord damage, broken bones, disembowelment, severe lacerations, or even death.

Following are eight tips that can help minimize the risk of party goers injuring themselves:

  • Check all pool equipment before the party to make sure it is working properly. Also make sure to have a fence around the pool to prevent small children from wandering into the pool unattended.
  • Directly on your party invitation, remind all parents that children who cannot swim or are not strong swimmers must have a parent in arm’s length of them whenever they are in the water. This helps set the expectation that parents need to monitor their children.
  • Hire a lifeguard to monitor the pool throughout the party. This ensures that a responsible person is monitoring the pool at all times and can help anyone in distress in the pool.
  • Do not allow diving. Hang prominent signs by the pool reminding guests that they can jump in feet-first only. Diving into the pool is a lot of fun, but, a dive too deep can result is serious head injuries like a concussion or traumatic brain injury.
  • Don’t serve beverages in glass bottles or cups; all drinkware should be made of plastic or other non-breakable material. If glass were to break on the pool deck, someone could step on a shard with their bare foot and need to visit the emergency room to remove the glass and/or have stitches.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol that you serve. If someone becomes intoxicated, stop serving them alcohol. Do not allow them in the pool and call them a cab or have another guest give them a ride home to prevent them from drinking and driving.
  • Do not allow large floats or pool toys during the party. While fun for the guests on the float, they can turn deadly if a swimmer is trapped underneath. Moreover, these toys can block the lifeguard’s view of the bottom of the pool.
  • If thunderstorms are in the forecast, reschedule the party.

You want guests talking about your party because they had such an amazing time, not because it turned into a cautionary tale for others. The expert personal injury law team at ECanter Lawyers hope you have a fun and safe pool party this summer!
