Backyard Trampolines: Fun or Frightening?

Posted on July 13, 2023

Many families don’t realize just how dangerous backyard trampolines can be. In 2018, more than 300,000 trampoline injuries required medical treatment, including more than 110,000 that necessitated a trip to the emergency room[1]. More than 90% of those who are injured are children, typically between the ages of five and 14[2]. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against allowing children to use home trampolines[3]. Most homeowners insurance companies require homeowners to purchase a special rider to cover their liability for a backyard trampoline.

Approximately 75% of injuries occur when multiple users are jumping on the trampoline at one time[4]. This creates an especially dangerous situation for the smallest jumpers. The jumpers could collide with one another or fall on top of each other. Another safety risk is doing somersaults and flips. In this situation, a jumper could land improperly and injure themselves. For trampolines that lack an enclosed net, another source of injury can be a jumper falling or jumping off the trampoline onto the ground or landing on the frame or springs. Injuries can range from sprains and strains, to broken bones, to head, neck and spine injuries.

If your child was injured on a backyard trampoline, you may have a premises liability case against the homeowner. To win a premises liability case, you will need to show that 1) the homeowner had a duty of care toward you while on their property, 2) the homeowner was negligent in their duty of care, and 3) their negligence caused your injuries. Some reasons that the homeowner may be negligent include:

  • Allowing more than one jumper on the trampoline at one time
  • Not having a net around the trampoline or having a net that was not fully closed
  • Allowing somersaults or flips
  • Not maintaining the trampoline in proper working order
  • Not supervising children using the trampoline

In some cases, an injured jumper may also be able to seek damages from the trampoline manufacturer if a manufacturing defect caused the injury.
