Elderly Abuse at Nursing Homes

Posted on August 19, 2020

As our parents and grandparents age, they will need more constant care that we may be unable to provide.  In these times, we seek out caregivers, nursing aides, and facilities that can deliver the care they need.  We trust these individuals with our beloved family, but it is not always easy to know if our parents and grandparents are receiving the compassionate and dignified care that they deserve.

Unfortunately, elder abuse and neglect is far more prevalent that most suspect.  According to the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA), a comprehensive review found that 10% of the elderly have experienced elder abuse or neglect.[1]   Studies reviewed by the NCEA highlight verbal abuse as the most common type of elder abuse, but physical abuse, neglect and financial abuse are not far behind.  Not surprisingly, elder abuse can lead to physical and psychological trauma, social isolation, depression, serious injuries, disabilities, as well as premature death.

Financial exploitation can put elderly individuals in dire financial ruin.  Research show that family members, especially adult children, are responsible in the majority of financial abuse cases.

Know the Signs

Signs of elder abuse may be obvious or quite subtle.  Watch for unexplained injuries, bedsores, strap marks, or unexplained infections or bruising.  In addition, be alert to sudden changes in behavior, depression, shame, withdrawal from social activities, poor hygiene, or unusual anxiety.

Keep an eye on your elderly loved one’s bank accounts and finances to prevent financial exploitation.  Review unusual withdrawals, subscriptions, and check for unexplained changes in wills or other legal documents.

When There is a Red Flag

Every individual, and especially our elderly, have the right to receive quality care in a healthy, comfortable environment without discrimination or abuse of any kind.

If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, neglect or discrimination either in an assisted living facility, rehabilitation facility, or at home with family or home health care aides, ECanter Lawyers may be able to help to help remove your loved one from the abusive situation as well as to navigate next steps.  For a complementary consultation, contact our office at 561-447-4500 to speak with an attorney.
