What Causes the Most Highway Accidents in Boca Raton?

Posted on January 10, 2022

I-95 is the most dangerous highway to drive in the US, according to a study from Zebra.com based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration[1]. However, as anyone from Boca Raton knows, I-95 and the turnpike are impossible to avoid. This time of year, with full-time Floridians going about their daily activities, snowbirds escaping the freezing temperatures up north, and tourists enjoying our beautiful beaches and shopping, traffic on I-95 and the turnpike can be tougher to tackle than usual, making it even more difficult to avoid an accident.

Major Causes of Traffic Accidents in Boca Raton and Throughout the Nation

  • Speeding: The speed limit on I-95 and the turnpike is 70 mph. However, we have all seen drivers traveling much faster than this. In 2019, speeding caused 26% of all traffic fatalities[2]. Speeding makes it harder for a driver to control the vehicle, reduces the effectiveness of the vehicle safety equipment (e.g. seatbelts), and can increase the level of crash severity and injuries[3].
  • Distracted Driving: This is a broad category that includes anything that distracts the driver from paying attention to the road. In 2019, 3,142 people were killed by distracted driving[4]. One of the largest sources of distraction is texting while driving. According to a study reported by AAA, drivers who text while driving are eight times more likely to be in a car crash or near miss than those who don’t[5].
  • Driving While Intoxicated: In the US, drunk driving kills one person every 52 minutes, totaling more than 10,000 preventable deaths each year[6]. It is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level above .08, however, however impairment can start at a blood alcohol level much lower than that.
  • Aggressive Driving and Road Rage: According to AAA, aggressive driving includes “speeding in heavy traffic, tailgating, cutting in front of another driver and then slowing down, running red lights, weaving in and out of traffic, changing lanes without signaling, blocking cars attempting to pass or change lanes, [and] using headlights or brakes to punish other drivers.” Similarly, road rage includes “cursing and rude or obscene gestures, throwing objects, ramming, sideswiping [and] forcing a driver off the road.”[7]
