Nursing Home Neglect & Abuse – What You Should Know

Posted on February 26, 2020

It is devastating to find out that your loved one has been hurt while living in a nursing home.  Determining the circumstances and activities that led to the injuries can be complex, but helping your loved one obtain the right medical care and justice is paramount.

Nursing homes are required to provide safe, clean environments for their residents. All residents must be treated with respect and dignity.  And while many elder care residences comply with these requirements, not all do.  And not all employees provide the proper medical and adequate supervision required for their residents.

Unfortunately, elder abuse is not uncommon.  Nursing home neglect or abuse may result in your loved one having bed sores, broken bones, bruises, unexplained weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration, depression, sudden illness, other injuries, or death.  It may be difficult to detect the abuse if your loved one is not aware or is frightened to talk about the abuse.  If you notice poor hygiene, urine or fecal odor, bruising, open wounds, significant weight loss, untreated bed sores, or missing personal items, it’s time to contact an experienced attorney.

Since nursing home residents are often sick or elderly and may be weak, they can easily become victims.  In addition to neglect, nursing home employees have been convicted of abuse including physical assault, sexual assault, use of unreasonable force, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, and sedation.

If your loved one communicates anything related to abuse – listen carefully and act swiftly.  If you believe that your loved one is in immediate danger, call the police and paramedics.  Your loved one can be treated promptly and moved to a different facility.

All nursing home residents are entitled to clean, safe and dignified living.
