Motorcycle Accidents

Posted on November 16, 2021

Florida is a haven for motorcycle enthusiasts. Our 274,000 lane miles of road[1], warm weather, and captivating scenery beckon to residents and tourists alike. In fact, Florida is ranked second in the nation for number of motorcycle registrations[2] and is home to 591,000 motorcyclists[3]. While cruising on the open road on your bike is liberating, it is also dangerous.

Motorcycle Accidents Are Common and Can Be Deadly

The Florida Department of Health recently released the following eye-opening findings from their 2019 Motorcycle Safety Report[4]:

  • Motorcycle traffic accidents caused 10,934 non-fatal emergency department visits, 3,733 non-fatal hospitalizations, and 597 deaths.
  • 35% of fatalities were related to traumatic brain injuries
  • The median charge for motorcyclists treated and released from the hospital emergency room with non-fatal injuries was $8,572.00.
  • The median charge for motorcyclists admitted to the hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries was $117,728.00.

Motorcycle accidents are more dangerous than car accidents due to the lack of protection that motorcycles provide. On top of that, Florida does not require motorcyclists over the age of 21 to wear helmets. Lack of a helmet can greatly increase the likelihood of experiencing a traumatic brain injury in an accident.

Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Often, motorcyclists are unfairly maligned for crashes when the other driver is actually at fault. In some cases, the driver of the other vehicle could be impaired or distracted. In other cases, the driver could be negligent because they:

  • Turned left in front of an oncoming motorcycle because the driver did not see it
  • Followed a motorcycle too closely and caused a rear end collision
  • Opened a driver-side car door into an oncoming motorcyclist

These are only a few of the many examples of the driver of the other vehicle being at fault for the accident.
