Brain Injuries – What You Need to Know

Posted on October 23, 2023

One of the most feared injuries from a car crash or slip and fall accident is a brain injury. This type of injury, also referred to as a TBI (traumatic brain injury), occurs when a person’s head experiences a violent jolt, such as hitting the pavement after a fall or being shaken in a car accident. A brain injury can also occur if an object penetrates into your brain, such as being shot in the head. TBIs are often classified as being mild, moderate, or severe; don’t be fooled by the term “mild” though, a mild brain injury is still a serious condition that requires medical care and monitoring.

Immediately after an incident causing a TBI, you may feel completely fine, have a headache or other minor symptoms, or be knocked unconscious. It’s impossible to tell at this point how severe your TBI is based on the symptoms; you can have a severe TBI and still feel fine immediately after an accident. For this reason, it’s important to see a healthcare provider if you experience a strong blow to your head for any reason. The healthcare provider will examine you, possibly conduct a neurologic exam, and may take an MRI or CAT scan of your head.

It’s very common for the signs of a TBI to slowly evolve in the hours, days, and weeks following the accident. According to the Mayo Clinic, some symptoms to be on the lookout for include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea / vomiting
  • Fatigue / change in sleep patterns
  • Speech problems
  • Dizziness / loss of balance
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Sensitivity to light and/or sound
  • Loss of consciousness for any length of time
  • Acting dazed, confused or disoriented
  • Memory or concentration problems
  • Feeling depressed and/or anxious
  • Seizures
  • Pupil dilation
  • Numbness in fingers/toes
  • Acting agitated
  • Unusual behavior
  • Slurred speech[1]

Keep your healthcare provider informed of any changes to your condition and seek medical care immediately if your condition worsens.

If your TBI is due to someone else’s negligence, you may be eligible to collect damages for your injury. You are entitled to collect compensation for doctor’s bills, hospital bills, imaging bills, physical therapy, medication, nursing care, assistive devices, lost wages, and future lost wages. You may also be able to collect damages for pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of consortium for your spouse.
