During the holiday season, car accidents and fatalities due to car wrecks increase significantly. Because of this, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) promotes their “Don’t Wreck the Holidays” campaign. During which they remind Americans that buzzed driving is drunk driving and that even one drink can lead to a DUI, car wreck, or even a fatality.
During the peak of the holidays in 2013, there were nearly 2,000 fatalities caused by drunk drivers. Additionally, between 2009-2013, there were over 3,500 fatalities due to drunk driving. With these things in mind, it is imperative for you and your family to have a plan with regard to your holiday celebrations.
We suggest the following to keep you and your family safe during the holiday season:
- Have a plan – determine who is the designated driver
- Be trustworthy – the designated driver must not have even one drink
- Seek alternate transportation – if a designated driver from your own party won’t work out, then choose public transportation, a cab, or Uber
